Thread subject: Security Override :: The Welcome Thread

Posted by Null Set on 01/13/2011 04:18:07
#1

As per request, this will be a thread for new members who want to make themselves known to the community. New members should post their introductory messages here. Any thread after this one that is related to this will be deleted. :) Sorry, but it's just that it's better we all say our messages in just one thread.

To the NEW members: Welcome to SO! All of us welcome you here and hope that you have a pleasant time here. Hopefully, you'd contribute whatever you can to the community.

Also, drop by the IRC :) (irc.evilzone.org #securityoverride)

:D

EDIT: To avoid kastrata's confusion I'd clarify something - this thread is also for introduction. :)

EDIT: Try introducing yourself with the following details: (1) specialty, (2) known languages, (3) experience and the like. You're free to introduce yourself the way you want to though.

EDIT: Just a brief reminder - please also read the rules found here

EDIT: An article that should be helpful to beginners: Click Here

Hacker does not necessarily imply Programmer nor vice versa, however each should have a strong grasp of security which can in turn lead to a programmer becoming a hacker. A hacker needs to learn how to create their own programs and exploits and as such are usually programmers but neither implies the other. Just clarifying that.

New here. Hope to learn something from this place. It at least looks better than that piece of crap hackforums and the people on here seem like they are at least interested in hacking.

I am pretty new to all of it and am currently trying to learn how to use Linux (I come from a Windows background). I choose Arch Linux because I want to learn and do not want everything served.

Have it take input from stdin, and then position the terminal over the answer box and next to the stuff you need to copy. If you you can enable it so your focus is set to the window your mouse is over it will help. Highlight the stuff you need to input, ctrl-c and then quickly switch to your already running program and shift-ctrl-v(for most terminals) and strike enter, get your output, and shift-ctrl-c and then back to the answer box and ctrl-v.

Or at least, thats what I usually do.

Also, welcome!

I figure I may as well post a bit about me... first and foremost, I'm a family man, so I stay busy with kids and extracurricular activities. I have a relatively strong background in physical security, so when I started studying networking I took to the security side real easily. I joined this site in a quest for more knowledge- these challenges are fun, and I enjoy it.
I think what I like most about this site (and others like it) is it goes beyond the theoretical- we can think up ways to exploit our web applications, our network, and our systems all day long. While I understand the theory behind attacks, I don't know which tools bring me there- this site is good for that. It's given me some tool / techniques to try against myself as well, which is good (just adds a few extra lines of validation / security per script).
As time permits, I plan on being active and contributing, and spending time on irc when I'm available.

Welcome. What did you do in physical security?

Posted by th3dead on 09/15/2011 09:57:53

Thanks for the welcomes.

I should include some better info about myself.

I'm an electrician. Years ago I learned a little about HTML and CSS, enough to build my own personal website. Nothing fancy, since I was a beginner. Then I learned some JavaScript, not a lot, just some of the basics. I actually have forgot quite a bit so will need to refresh myself on the language.

Recently I started learning Python and got sidetracked with C. While working on C I got interested in security measures and started learning more about injection on db's. I had several programmers give me advice on which language to start with, most said C and Python. I now realize that isn't enough in today's environment. In order to learn the ins and outs about security you have to learn a lot about a lot of them. I also realize that I need a lot more PHP and JavaScript, more PHP it seems. Enough about that, I know a little about several and would like to get really good with the most common.

I am a member of several forums, but this site seems to have a good variety of challenges, not just injection methods, more methods that make you think about the old basic methods that a lot of people either don't talk about, or just don't use. I am not a tool person and would rather hand type the inputs and such. I feel you get a better understanding of what you are doing. Then the tools will be even better, at least then I will know exactly what they are doing to find and exploit the vulns.

I have to also say that I am not blackhat, I am more gray or white, but have to learn the methods to know how to patch the vulns, and want to help others learn how to do the same. To beat the 'cracker' you must know their thinking and their methods.

@mod
Sorry for posting the reply in the wrong thread yesterday, I see you guys deleted it. I'll watch more carefully where I am next time. lol

Come to the IRC! ;)

Hello Everyone,

I am Stealth-. The hyphen is there for a reason, I use it around the net as a distinguishing mark from all the other Stealth's ;)

I usually spend most of my time over athttp://www.hellboundhackers.orgackers.org, but the community there has been dying for a while and when NullSet popped by the HBH IRC he was telling me about here. I thought I'd give the place a go. I was in the IRC about a week ago and had a few interesting discussions and everyone seemed pretty cool. :)

Anyway, some information about me. I play with a variety of infosec tools, such as Metasploit/ettercap/etc, I know PHP and Python, and enough C/C++ to get by. I'm familiar with web design (CSS/XHTML) as well, but it's not my favourite thing to do. I generally focus on computer security, but as I'm sure you know that tends to pull in all sorts of areas in IT with it. I'd like to get involved with the community here, but to be honest this is more of a testing phase as I'm a little tentative to jump into a community I might not like.

I have a website here: http://www.stealth-x.com
The site itself is a mess, and some of the content is from back when I was learning programming, but there are also a few articles on there I'm quite proud of. The site has been featured on both HackADay and LinuxToday.
My HBH profile is here, for those interested: http://www.hellboundhackers.org/profile/stealth-.htmlalth-.html

Now, I have a few questions for you guys! ;D
1. Why are our passwords restricted to alphanumeric characters only? That seems rather insecure, and if you are hashing the passwords (like I would hope a security community is doing), special characters should not matter.
2. My avatar appears to have trouble loading. I tried directly uploading it, and nothing happened. I then tried linking to it on my site, and now my avatar is pure black. Does the site have a problem with GIF avatars?

Hope to talk to some of you guys soon :D

1. We should probably change that, I guess. I'll look into it.

2. This does seem weird, and has been going on for some time. Try other file formats. I uploaded mine as a .jpg elsewhere then just linked it. Should work for you too. Will see what I can do here.

Welcome to SO. Hope you enjoy yourself here. :D

Awesome, thanks. It's not a big problem, you can create a strong password with just alphanumeric, it's just an unsettling restriction as that is usually used in situations where the site stores passwords in plaintext.

2. This does seem weird, and has been going on for some time. Try other file formats. I uploaded mine as a .jpg elsewhere then just linked it. Should work for you too. Will see what I can do here.

I just tried linking to both .jpg and .png as well, and another separate image. It just seems to result in this black logo you see now. If I try and upload it right from my computer, it just sets it to the default "No Avatar". Not sure if that helps.

Welcome to SO. Hope you enjoy yourself here. :D

Thanks :)

Welllllll hellllooo there everyone! How you all doing? I am green, a newbie, n00b, or what have you. I can barley find my own IP address, let alone find the websites as I saw for one of the first challenges. The reason why I am here is to learn how "hacking" works and how to prevent it from happening again to my POS cash register. I almost lost all my inventory(in my computer) and I am sure there is a way to get the information from the credit cards that my register processes. So from this attack it has inspired me to educated myself in the art of internet security. I have been reading many forums and needless to say i am dumbfounded. Can anyone suggest a good very basic intro forum or guide me somewhere to find a simple in depth thread i can read and learn from?? Thank you.

So, awesomely annoying notification on frontpage got me in here :)

I'm an hw/sw engineer, working as a webdeveloper, and I've dabbled with computer security since I was kid (You know, the usual messing with school admins, irc floods etc. ;) ).

I'm an experienced programmer and developer and can write most any language.. From hardware assembly through C/C++ onto Java and PHP etc.. save for MS stuff like .NET and such. Also, I've never gotten to graps with Python, although I'd like to :P

Came by to check out whats going on in the web-sec world, and stayed for the awesome challenges and aticles :D Most of the challenges are doable without "advanced" tools, so I'm looking to get into learning some more advanced/automated tools..

Cheers

Hello,

Let's get that "Introduce yourself" notice removed shall we?

As requested:
(1) specialty: No specialty really but I like the programming and injection challenges
(2) known languages: (more or less in decreasing order of competence) PHP, MySql, Python, Perl, Javascript, OOBasic, working on Bash. Can hack together C and Java if I have to. Passing familiarity with half a dozen other languages.
(3) experience and the like: Web developer by title. De facto IT, network, and everything else technical for my employer, which mostly means supporting a bunch of Macs (nightmarish task) but I am currently building a file server as part of a near complete office network rebuild. Lots of challenge sites :)

Nice site-- one of the better challenge sites, actually. Thanks to all those who've made it possible.

Hello,

I don't want to make my introduction too long, but I'll just tell you guys a little bit about my past and present story cutting out all the boring parts.

I'm Jason, age 23 (24 tomorrow infact, which I'm pretty excited about) I've been into computer security for around 7 - 8 years, my dream job is working in forensics. I got my first Personal computer at around 16, with that awesome dial up sound, I still love it to this day, I have lots of knowledge on various subjects, mainly WiFi security testing.

I code in a lot of programming languages and know some Web design, I suffer from Autism, but it doesn't affect my daily life, I can be pretty lazy though! I'm always interested in learning everything I can from Mathematics, to Physics to Astronomy.

It's great to be here guys, these challenges are the best I've seen on all the wargaming sites I've used, I also beleive in Open Source software so I'm sure I have plenty to offer to the code bank.

See you around the forum! :)

~Jason.

What's up to everyone that is affiliated with SO?

You can call me Velcer,

Let me start off by saying that networking and system security intrigue me and will be my forte. I am not as tech savvy as I would like to be but I do hold a fair amount of knowledge on many different topics throughout the computer systems hierarchy. I prefer a PC over a Mac and I am familiar with both Windows and Mac OS, however I do prefer Linux as an OS (but lets face the music, Windows will continue to rule the digital highway for years to come). I am a fast learner when it comes to hands on experience, put a book in front of me and I fall asleep. Put a book and a computer in front of me and let trials begin. I have dabbled with Java, Java Script, HTML and PHP, but by no means have mastered the languages. My mind is hungry so let the learning begin and let's see what I can bring to the table as well.

I'm exited to be here and grow with this community.

All I wanna do is learn! I've been learning about computers for 5 years.

I've practiced a bunch of different hacking techniques such as SQLi, XSS, and RFI. I've been developing in C++, VB.Net, Python, PHP, HTML, CSS, and Java for a while. I'm interested in steganography, cryptography, and really ANYTHING to do with computers.

If you have ANY questions, please message me.

Hello all, ProxyFox here. I've been on many hacker forums before this and found SO through StumbleUpon oddly enough. I used to be part of the community at UndergroundSystems.org, but we got shut down after some amateur decided to "Hack" the web server. I honestly think Chem just got sick of dealing with it, or perhaps didn't have the time or money to keep it going, but that was the best community I was part of so far. I hope to learn and grow with SO and contribute what I can. I'm very new to the programming/scripting scene so I only know basic HTML, some JavaScript and very little CSS, but I want to learn much more. I'll hop by the IRC when I'm able, but working graveyard shift I'm usually working or sleeping. Hope to get to know you all better as time goes on and thanks for having me.

Hello,

I hope to specialize in offensive security testing. I have a background as network admin and help desk. I learned a lot and took advantage of free training from the military. I gained interest and pursued a graduate degree with security emphasis, and love doing things related to network security testing, computer forensics, and cyber security law. After finishing a masters, I took programming classes. I can build a simple android app, and create basic websites, but I hope to improve in Java, Pearl, Ruby and anything else. I think I have a knack for reverse engineering.... at least while looking at code.

I love learning, and I am glad that someone told me about this site!

What's up folks.

I'm was thinking that when I finally solve decrypt 5 that I was going to post a pointer or two that got me there w/o a usable GPU but alas I'm still working on it and it might be rude to do so without the introduction post.

Not being very new to technological exploitation, I played with phones and computers a lot in the 90s and went into software engineering eventually for a career. Just before that, I was primarily into network security (tcp sequence prediction, tcp hijacking telnet sessions on the cleft of SSH 1 coming out, SYN/ICMP exploits if not a moment or two before the term DoS was really coined).

Along with programming I'm professionally involved in abuse/fraud prevention at the code and administrative level more recently so I've been brushing up on a lot of things.

Anyhow, this is an interesting site you guys have here. I'm finding myself spotty in a lot of areas and hoping to round my overall knowledge. Currently reading about KoreLogic's special rulesets for John the Ripper as per fore-mentioned challenge.

Wish me luck.

Hello from Greece...i am here to solve all the challenges (at least i hope so :) )

I am skilled at programming, especially, C/C++, and bash/python scripts.

Just a question...can we use automated tools for cracking (e.g., ncrack...)?

Thank you

New to pretty much everything and the challenges are busting my balls but I'm having a good time...when I'm not silently raging that is.

I'm starting to think I could use some help.

(3) i got into computers when i managed to get a virus and was to poor to afford anti-virus so i had to manually remove it which opened the door, then i learned html in high school and discovered a loopholev (i guess itd be a zero day since i was the first to discover it) in the test grading system which kept me in the room of which the door led me... ever since i got into computers ive been constantly learning new things from sql all the way to the osi model. im not a H@(|<3R IM A HACKER, i enjoy taking things and pushing them to go beyond their intended purpose

welcome to SO. This is a great community. A lot of people here willing to help you so sit back and make friends. Jump on the IRC, good times in there. Don't get offended if you are put off or looked down on, you have to earn your place here and it's not about how big you can talk and how much you know but how much you come here and contribute and be a real friend to people and get to know them for the person they are. You have our back and we have yours, if you are just here to get info and dip out well good luck to you, that's not really being part of the community
but welcome.

Great to be at this place, where we can actually do the stuff rather than a Tutorial. Totally ready to Learn from everyone here. No specialization yet! Have shallow knowledge in C, but hoping to go deeper. And my experiences include fooling around on vulnerable websites and fiddling with my friend's computer. ;)

(2) I'm really good with python, and perl as well as integrating both with php. I can modify C/C++ but I cannot create anything in either.
(3) I currenty am Security+ and Network+ certified, and I'm almost finished with OSCP. That's about all I got...oh yeah, and I love drum n' bass music, and I hate everything on television except for movies.

Hello,
First off, I would like to make something clear: my username, "elite_katana" has nothing to do with computers. In no way am I implying I am of "elite" status in any way shape or form when it comes to computers. My nickname has an entirely different meaning. I joined this site in hopes of learning as much about computer security and networking as I can. I like what I've seen so far content-wise here, and I'm looking forward to the hacking challenges as well. I'm not in any computer related field or computer science field at the moment, but I have been using computers my whole life, I guess you could say I'm the family's "computer guy"...that's about it. Some piece of technology breaks in the family, it's probably on me to fix it or figure things out.

I guess you could say my "specialty" would be Android and Linux. I'm not quite a developer, but know the OS inside and out. I've used just about every release of Windows there is (not by choice) but at heart I'm a Linux guy. I currently own a Google Nexus One. I am running Ubuntu at the moment (only because I can't figure out how to get anything else to work with the Android SDK). Known Languages: Java, Python. I look forward to meeting other Linux/Android geeks here as well.

Hello everyone, I was cruising the web and found this sight at first I was a bit suspicious since forums for hackers seem to be a dime a dozen now a days, full of skiddies and wanna be hackers with no real useful info. However I scanned the content a bit and found plenty of good information and I decided I would register since I intend to make my career in computer technology.

The community seems nice and full of intelligent individuals so I think I will enjoy my time here.

Hello! New to this site, not new to the hacking scene. Let's see... Specialty I guess would be SQL injection? Not really sure what I could call my specialty. Probably programming algorithms, actually. I know HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Java, Perl, Python, PHP, C/++, Lua, brainfuck, whitespace, LSL, uhh.. I'm sure there's more. I've had experience with all sorts of stuff (XSS, SQLIA, cracks, keygens, etc), but I can't say I'm that great at any of it. There's always room to learn anyway.

Any suggestions on where to go first?

Hi l33t hax0rs :)

I saw the challenge to find out the SSH server version, so I did an nmap scan, after which the site didn't work anymore... I pinged it from one of my servers and it worked fine, until I did an nmap scan there, which resulted in the site not being available again...

It's kind of weird to be blocked by the actions needed for the challenges... :)

Argh, lost my WiFi while submitting my reply.. Attempt #2. :)

Hey and welcome to SO!
Regarding your problem, SSH challenges are not working at the moment so you may skip them. :)
And also, nmap can be used to get the solution but is really not necessary. IMO, you should try to find some other methods on how to grab the SSH version or something similar. But as I previously mentioned, you can't try your methods out on SO right now.

Well, best regards and good luck with solving the challenges! :)

I'm (obviously) new to this site, I saw it while browsing on a few other hacking sites. I'm not going to reveal too much info about myself because I prefer to stay anon.

I'm still pretty much a newbie to the computer world, I've only been working with computers for about 3 years. I'm pretty good a everything except for scripting, programming, and actual hacking. I hope to learn a lot from this community and I hope that I can contribute a decent amount to this website.

I've been exploring hacking for the last month and have developed a huge crush on it. My girlfriend is getting jealous (seriously)! I love puzzles and hacking feels like a new puzzle every time. I don't even know much but I have always analyzed how people do things and consider alternative ways of doing things (in general). Hacking seems just that; alternative ways of doing very common things. I hope to learn much here. BTW I'm in the museum education field but I freelance as a concept artist and 3D modeler.

Greetings...
My Code Name is Omnicide for the general nature of what we do requires confidentuality(sp?) at all given times, I will never type my real name, and I hope that does not offend anyone present.
I used to toy around a bit with a few minor programs, and a few minor hacks. EX: Myspace's photo uplink code being able to be used as a PW allowing access into the profiles of others, (Patched).
I am extremely interested in getting back into the world of Hacking, however, I would like someone to teach me how to opperate at the maximum efficency, and show me the ropes, as I am self taught in most general areas.
I find such a method of self learning to be taxing, and time consuming though.
So, if anyone is interested, I will not disappoint.
Thank You,
Omnicide.

Hi i'm .Thr1sa, and that's my first day here. I'm learning in an engeneering uni, but we have few security class, so i came to learn it by myself, and i hope i can get some help.
About me: I have basic skills in c/c++, java, c# and php, and javascript, but that is only basics yet. I love the networking, and security things, but i think all of my knowledge is theoretical, not so practical, so i want to exercise it more in real life. <or in hacking challange>.
I hope i will learn these things from you and i can give it back to the next round.

Hi people! I'm a science university student but have always had an interest in computers. When I was about 12 I learned about, and thought this was the only way to "hack", 'view source' of a webpage ha! But am really interested now by more complex methods. I am really into programming, don't laugh at me: but I use VB, learned it since i was 12 for 10 years so am pretty advanced in it, but I'm really looking to learn a new language like C/java soon. See ya guys around

Hello All, I'm a complete newbie to computers and pen testing. I learned about it from a friend of mine and after doing some research on the subject I'm hooked.I'm here to learn and hopefully one day contribute. My goal, once I retire, will be to pursue a career in computers and networking. Looking forward to talking to and learning from you all.

Hey I'm icon. I've been active on a couple of these kinds of boards. I've been a ghost on here for a while now. I hope to be a helpful member. I have extensive experience in Java, Python, and networking. I'm continuing to build my skills in the C families, web oriented stuff, and finding exploits. I have a decent amount of real world experience, but I am NOT a blackhat. Worst case, gray, but I try to keep it clean most of the time.

I'll try to be helpful and active, but my other interests keep me pretty busy.

Anyway, glad to be here.

Missed where it said to post on this thread. Sorry

Hi all,

I'm Mohammed.

I know a bit of everything IT related, I love Perl, I live at 127.0.0.1, many times a day I GET (or POST) through my default gateway with whatever browser and either ?search= google or just click on my <a href=> favorites in Chrome, use Firefox extensions a lot, read a lot of IT PDFs illegally downloaded from cyberlockers, the usual shite we all do. I hope to learn a lot here.

Love and peace to everyone. Please point me to the first mission. Best.

Hello eveybody ! B)

I'm new here ... ( Obviously :P )

I apologize already for my bad English as it is not my mother tongue neither my second language ...

As it is traditional on most Forums, newbies "must" introduce themselves . Personally, it is a great matter of courtesy ...

So, here's what you guys asked to know :
(1) Speciality : Programming, I guess ...
(2) Known Languages : C/C++, Python, Bash, HTML/CSS, JavaScript ...
(3) Experience and the like : I've been learning programming most of the time, used a bit of SQLi, Phishing and Social Engineering ...

Other things you guys didn't mention but surely want to know :
(1) How did I find you ? : A friend of mine told me about this website containing a load of challenging challenges ( am I even writing this right ? :P ), serious and competent members ...
(2) Why am I here ? : To learn, obviously, I just can't stand the way I am so ignorant about so much knowledge ...

Well, I think this is all ...

Hope we all get along well ... B)

Hello everyone!

I'm phygion and I'm flattering myself of knowing quite something concering computer security. However, I'm lacking in practical experience, so I decided to join SO to change this.

Concerning programming languages, the most importaint ones I speak are C++, Java, Lua, Python, Shellscript, I think.

Hello, an hobby sysadmin here :3
Maintaining linux servers on the web is an expensive hobby of mine($230/mo to dedicated servers and vps's) and i love to experiment with them :p
Also my servers are running some small projects of mine.

I'm not really creative but i speak these languages:
- C(++)
- Java
- A little ARM assembly, no experience with x86
- Bash

Today i wanted to freshen my knowledge of penetration testing and server security, and it's really fun to do that here!

Hey all,

First to all of the admins and mods I would like to say thank you for taking your time to make/maintain this amazing site. I have used other sites similar to this (HBH and HTS), but the couple of hours I have spent on here I feel as if this one exceeds those others in terms of types of challenges available and maintenance of the site (no diss intended to anyone involved in the other sites).

I am a lifelong student that is currently earning my second BS degree (this time getting a more useful degree -- Computer Science). C++ is prob my strongest language being that was the one that I was using while being introduced to the amazing world of programming. I have also used VB, Java, Python and a few scripting languages, though I am far from mastering those at this time.

Lately, thanks to a Discrete Math course, I have been falling in love with the math side of things. I am currently doing the work from an online Cryptography course on coursera.org, and was excited to see the crypto type challenges on here. Sorry for being long-winded, and thanks again for all of your work on this site.

Hello, everyone.

I just started on this site, and I must say that I have grown fond of it quickly. I obtained a degree in mathematics & computational physics years ago, but strangely enough I never really found myself enjoying the computer science aspect of it all until a really amazing friend helped to spark an interest. I still find that my love for mathematics is far beyond the scope of all else, especially within the fields of Special Function Theory, Real & Complex Analysis, and Fractional Calculus. Nevertheless, I'm thankful that this site exists, thankful for those that have made contributions to this site, and thankful that I will have a chance to learn more about this field.

Hello all fellow hackers!

I am ne0bug (as is plainly obvious...) and I am a beginner when it comes to hacking. I don't know too much about programming (only the fundamental concepts like the different abstract data types, etc..) and have written code for very very simple programs like "Hello World" and a Calculator in C. I have messed around in assembler, learning from video tutorials about how to reverse software and make keygens but it didn't really take me anywhere. Now I am trying to get back into hacking, but this time starting from the very basics! :D

Anyways, it is a pleasure to be on securityoverride.org and I am currently enjoying the experience! I hope to learn from as many experienced people as possible on here.
